Rich and poor. Republicans and Democrats. Majorities and Minorities. As I have lived, I have never seen a divide like I see today. I have never felt like I do today. Today, as I watch our rule of law, system and checks and balances, and in my opinion, overall sense of democracy begin to crumble, I question why. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” Ok….. Equality couldn’t have led us here. Equality doesn’t enforce the law for some and ignore it for others. Equality isn’t ensuring that the rich pay less taxes while the poor pay more. Equality isn’t defending the 2nd Amendment while failing to acknowledge the horrific ripple effects of minimum mandatory sentencing and innocent humans dying as a result of a capricious death penalty system. Equality is not the leader of the “free world” refusing to shake the hand of a political colleague because he doesn’t personally care for the decisions they have made. Inversely, equality is not the speaker of the house tearing up the speech of the leader of the “free world” because she was offended by his words, ideas, or actions. This isn’t equality. This is hypocrisy. Personally, I am beginning to have a great deal of questions about all of this. Many of our politicians love to preface their statements with, “this is what the American people want.” To this day, I have never had a single politician ask me what I wanted. Am I not American? For the first time in my life, I don’t believe a single word that exits the mouth of anyone in Washington. To me, this isn’t about us. It’s about them. To me, it’s about their need to maintain their power. To me, it’s about their need to keep wealth and its’ benefits within their control. We are continually increasing defense spending while cutting the budget for education. To me, the message is simple; give them guns and keep them ignorant. As long as we are unaware of the power of unity and knowledge, we will always be easily controlled. I believe that it is time for us to stand together. Don’t let the color of your skin cloud your judgement. Don’t treat anyone who isn’t your enemy like they are. Don’t let the media dictate what’s good, right, stylish, or ethical to you because clearly, they have no idea what it is. There is no difference between CNN and Fox. The truth of the matter is that they are both in pursuit of the same thing; good ratings. To them, this isn’t about justice, truth, or change. It’s about ratings which lead to higher prices for air, which also leads to more money. If the powers that be truly wanted an educated society, they would ensure that true knowledge was readily available. We need to become a society that cares about all people rather than some of the people. If someone needs food, share yours. If someone needs clothing, give some of yours. If someone needs shelter, find a room. If someone needs hope, give some. If someone needs to be heard, listen. We are the only solution to this dilemma. My fear is that we become so progressive that we have regressed to where we began; the verge of total anarchy. In this Country that ALL of us have worked to build, maintain, and improve, there should be room for ALL of us. I am not, cannot, and will never allow anyone to treat me like an unwanted guest in my own land. In a democracy, the people have the power. I am the people. You are the people. We are the people. To me, I think that it is time for the people to make a stand. If the people that we elected can’t do what we elected them to do, I believe that it is time to put some people in their places who can. Let this not continue to be the great divide. I pray that we truly become the United States of America that equally ensures liberty and justice for all. Patrick
As always, this week, please do something for someone other than yourself for no reason at all other than to make their lives better. Also, if you make it to where you’re going, please don’t forget to leave a map for the rest of us. Always Choose Love.
