Honor.

It’s Monday, and I find myself here.  I’m struggling with being a parent, Hueman, and African American simultaneously.  I promise you, it’s not easy.  As a parent, I want to convince my child that it’s going to be okay.  The data suggests that it won’t.  As a Hueman, I want others to see that we’re not that different.  We seemingly couldn’t be more different.  As an African American, I want to take to the streets and fight for the basic rights that are still being denied to me and my people.  I hate social media, so even if I did fight, and I have, I would never make a post about it.  Honor….I am very skeptical to embrace the newly found understanding of the African American struggle from those who seemed to profit off it just yesterday.  Roger Goodell now supports Colin Kaepernick.  The NFL closed many of its’ offices out of respect for Juneteenth.  Black Lives now Matter. In order to truly understand that anything matters, you must first be willing to understand, accept, and ensure that the sins of the past will never be committed again.  In order to understand that anything matters, you have to be fully committed to ensuring that the abused now feel safe, secure, and supported.  Black Lives Matter.  Black Lives Matter.  I realize that right now, it’s popular to protest and trendy to donate.  However, the true commitment will be demonstrated when a deserving African American is sitting across the desk from a White American interviewing for a job that was seemingly given away prior to the interview.  Semantics..  Commitment will be demonstrated when the comforts of the suburbs will be sacrificed in order to ensure that the discomfort of the inner cities are lessened.  Commitment will be demonstrated when you are the only one in the room that looks and feels like you, yet you refuse to not stand in your truths about your commitment.  Commitment will be demonstrated in November when this racist president (I won’t capitalize the p because his very demeanor, presence, and morality are low.  Consistency..).  Commitment will be demonstrated when Mike Vick can commentate at football games without mention of his past sins.  Commitment will be demonstrated when White sins are treated the same as African American sins.  Sin is sin…  As you have read, you know that I honestly believe that all living things matter.  However, I’d be lying if I said that African Americans aren’t confined to their own private hells in this Country that require us to be thankful and accepting of less while remaining silent about our true feelings.  I’d be lying if I said that professionalism often comes at the price of our Culture and Ethnic practices.  I’d be lying if I said that I’ve sometimes had more in depth conversations about my White co-workers pets than I’ve had about my own children.  I’d be lying if I said that I haven’t had questions about the image of good and bad in this Country.  Remember, the good guy is always the guy who wears the white hat.  The guy who wears the black hat??  Well… You know the story.  This is what you don’t know.  Now that you know, demonstrate your commitment.  Most of the African Americans that I know are afraid to swim in the ocean.  Perhaps there is something that is echoed from our ancestors that lives deep within us that causes us to not trust it.  Perhaps it’s because so many of them live beneath the sea because they either refused or were too weak to accept slavery.  Perhaps it’s because we are disconnected from where we began.  The culture that we have in this Country is a culture that was developed from the broken pieces of our original culture.  When our true understanding was finite, we let our souls lead the way.  Soul music, soul food, soul stirring, and worship….It’s other worldly at times.  You see, our struggle requires your help.  However, it does not require your pity.  The truth of the matter is that I’m too weak to comfort you through the sins that you either refused to acknowledge or accept yesterday.  Imagine what we could be as a Nation if we were one Nation?  Can you imagine the beauty, strength, love, and growth that we could create?  We can do this.  We should do this.  We must do this.  African Americans have been fighting for Freedom in this Country for 401 years.  It’s long overdue.  It’s time….Patrick

This week, please do something for someone other than yourself for no reason at all other than to make their lives better.  As always, if you make it to where you’re going, please don’t forget to leave a map for the rest of us.  Let’s change the course that was designed for us to travel.  Always Choose Love…
